How To Wash A Waist Trainer and Make It Smell AMAZING! (Easy)

Taking good care of your waist trainer is a sure way to make it last as long as possible. In order to continue enjoying the benefits the waist trainer provides, proper care and maintenance cannot be overemphasized.

Being a body-shaping undergarment, waist trainers are typically worn close to the skin and so will undergo a lot of stretching, wear and tear. In addition to this, regular use of waist trainers, particularly while working out, will lead to build-up of sweat, dirt, and oil on the fabric. If not properly cleaned, the garment may lose its structure and durability.

In this article, we will be looking at the best way to care for and maintain your waist trainer, including how to wash it and what precautions to take when cleaning it.

Washing Your Waist Trainer

It is best to hand wash your waist trainer, preferably in cold water. After washing, lay the waist trainer down flat to dry.

Never put a waist trainer in a washing machine or dryer.

Putting a waist trainer in a washing machine or dryer can shrink the latex material and damage the steel bones placed inside them for reinforcement.

When washing your waist trainer, do so using the following steps:

  • Get a soft cloth, mild shampoo or shower soap and water in a basin. Do not use hot water, but lukewarm or cold water. Hot water can damage the material and lead to discoloration. Avoid using laundry detergents to wash your waist trainers. This is because some detergents contain dyes, alcohol, bleach or fragrances, all of which could damage the undergarment. If you do use a detergent, use a mild detergent.
  • Add the soap to the water in the basin, mix it around until the soap is evenly distributed.
  • Use the cloth dipped in water with some soap mixed into it, to gently rub the waist trainer. Be careful not to scrub too hard so as to avoid damaging the fabric
  • Wipe every visible surface of the waist trainer while occasionally dipping the cloth in the soapy water
  • After this, rinse the washcloth in clean water until it is completely free of any soap and then use it to wipe down the waist trainer. Do this thoroughly until there is no soap residue left on the garment
  • When you are done wiping the soap residue off, hang the waist trainer up to dry out in the open where air reaches all the sides of the garment, both inside and out.

Do not wring your waist trainer!

This can cause it to break, especially if it has inner flexible steel bones.

  • If you are unable to hang the waist trainer out to dry, you can allow the garment to dry flat or drip dry on a clothes line
  • Only use the waist trainer again after it is completely dry.

Submerge it in water

However, this method has a few disadvantages. Some waist trainers are not made of materials that are suitable for submerging in water.

If you choose to wash your waist trainer by submerging it in water, these are the steps to take:

  • Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and then add mild soap or shampoo to it
  • Submerge your waist trainer in the bucket of soapy water, allowing it to soak up some of the water. Do this a few times by dunking it up and down several times.
  • Remove the waist trainer and put it in a bucket with fresh water to rinse. Rinse out the garment by dunking it again several times, as before, until it is completely free of soap.

Care and Maintenance Tips

Here are some useful tips to help extend the life of your waist trainer:

  • At the end of the day, after taking off your waist trainer, hang it to dry inside out over the back of a chair.
  • Try to alternate your waist trainer, to avoid wearing the same one every day. Buying two waist trainers and alternating them daily, helps to prolong the life of the undergarments. This is because each one gets a rest between each wear.
  • Try to do some research on the best way to properly clean the specific material your waist trainer is made of by studying the garment care instructions
  • When you first purchase a waist trainer, try to break it in by wearing it for two to four hours each day.
  • Never iron a waist trainer, especially if it is 100% latex. The heat from the iron will only completely melt the garment
  • Be sure to only store your waist trainer after it is completely dry. This way, mold and mildew will not grow on it. Also, do not wear it while it is still damp as this can cause a rash.
  • When storing your waist trainer, lay it flat in a drawer or closet away from direct light. Do not roll it up, instead, hang it using a clothespin or special lingerie hangers. This way, it can maintain its shape.
  • Try to clean your waist trainer regularly, but not too often. You can use the garment a few times between washes instead of washing it every time after wearing it. This way, you can maintain the waist trainer’s compression and shape.
  • You can safely remove stubborn stains from your waist trainer with a soft bristles old toothbrush to avoid damaging the garment. Apply some soap on the brush and scrub the stained area gently, however do not bend the waist trainer while scrubbing.
