Why every woman needs Makeup Setting Spray in your beauty bag…keep reading to learn how to make your own and where to buy one in stores
When I first heard of the term “Makeup Setting Spray” I thought to myself… another silly product aimed at exploiting makeup lovers for their dollars that delivers a merely noticeable result. I didn’t understand why this spray is so important for every makeup application and now i’m surprised I went all my life without it!
What is makeup setting spray?
Makeup setting spray is meant to be the last step in your makeup routine. It is a light mist that sprays gently onto your face to lock in all makeup including foundation, powders, concealer and eyeshadow. This spray helps the makeup from transferring onto other surfaces and prevents the absorption of makeup into the skin.
DIY Makeup Setting Spray
When I first heard of this I thought, “I have to have this!”. With a little research online, I discovered how to make a “Do it yourself” Makeup setting spray. All that is required is a sterilized spray bottle, some distilled water OR rose water, Aloe vera gel OR Glycerol and Jojoba oil. This is a super easy concoction to make, you mix all the ingredients together and voila you have yourself your own makeup setting spray AND toner! This mist is so refreshing that you can spray it all day long on those hot summer days. The best part is that you will know EXACTLY what is in this mixture and you know it is paraben, fragrance and sulphate-free!

When I had the opportunity to receive a REAL setting spray at a discount… I jumped on it because I wanted to compare my DIY spray to the real deal!
The spray I received is called “Glam Essentials Hello Cutie Makeup Setting Spray”. My first instincts were to whip out my detective magnifying glass and check out the ingredients…
The main marketed ingredients are: Vitam C, Glycolic Acid, Aloe Vera, Green Tea and Chamomile.
Aloe Leaf Juice, Purified Water, Butylene Glycol, Witch Hazel, Bark Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Hyaluronic acid, Sweet Orange Peel, Carrot Seed Oil, Thiotic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Potassium Gluconate…etc.. Green tea is the second to last ingredient
In my non-expert eyes, these ingredients don’t seem too bad, however there are way too many ingredients combined just to make a setting spray… my rule of thumb is the more the worse! Less is better because less is closer to natural.
My first impression
When I first sprayed this spray, my first thoughts were, “This smells exactly like my orange car freshener” and I didn’t mean it in a good way. The smell is very strong and if i’m going to put something on my face I want it to be light and airy.
Second, the spray is not a mist – it shoots out strongly and too much liquid expels at one time. I feel that the bottle should be modified so that the mist doesn’t jolt the person who is spraying it!
Does it work?
Despite my two complaints, I have to say that Yes this product does work and it does work better than my DIY setting spray. My makeup stays in place all day long and by the end of the day it isn’t absorbed into my skin.
Because this product is less natural though, I wouldn’t use it every day. I will continue to use my DIY setting spray daily and use this setting spray for special occasions or if i’m going out somewhere! Keep in mind i have very sensitive skin so anything that is not natural tends to cause irritation in my skin quickly.
